Elective Students from Boston University

Following a leisure trip to Beijing and Guangzhou, students Curtis Hon and Kelsey Shideler of Boston University School of Medicine arrived in Hong Kong to start their one-month elective in our Deparment of Imaging and Interventional Radiology and our Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology respectively. As their first experience away from their home institution, they welcomed the differences seen in the teaching and practice here and appreciated the opportunity of this exchange.

Under the lead of Prof Simon Yu, Chairman of the IIR department, Curtis thought the highlight of the attachment was the chance to witness new cases, some being quite complex, every day.

“CUHK was recommended to me by my sister who did an attachment here a few years ago, but she was attached to another department. The IIR department works on many trials and I am getting to see a full spectrum of IR treatments, something not possible back home.”

On the other hand, Kelsey was most impressed by the teaching on ward, with the minutious physical examinations given to patients and the precise and consistent techniques taught to students.

“I think the teachers here are very patient and procedures are performed in a very consistent way, which makes it easier for students to follow. Our schedule also allows us time to research on topics, so that we can get more in-depth and absorb new knowledge more efficiently.”
