‘Super-scholar’ Ready to Embrace CUHK’s Unique College System and Humanity, to Nurture Compassion to become a Good Doctor

Among the admitted candidates is the only ‘super-scholar’ of this year’s HKDSE, and four students with 5** in six subjects.

Maggie LAM Li Man, the only ‘super-scholar’ of this year’s HKDSE, attaining level 5** in all seven subjects and also scoring 5** for the extended mathematics module, has been admitted to MBChB (Global Physician-Leadership Stream).  She says being a doctor has been  her dream since childhood and, after seeing her family members  suffer from illnesses, she wishes to acquire medical knowledge and help people in need.

Maggie said, ‘Being a good doctor is my ultimate goal.  A good doctor should  give more care and attention  to patients, but not only in treating  illness.  CUHK is a place filled with warmth and humanity which I think will be a good ground for cultivating humanistic care and will help enhance my communication skills and  equip me to becoming a better physician.’

When asked about her expectations of her future medical studies, the top scorer responded with delight. ‘The GPS programme provides extra leadership training, as well as exchange opportunities. I wish to grasp the opportunities to go abroad for further study and expand my knowledge.’

CUHK Medicine Ranks Among World’s Top 50 Medical Schools

Professor Francis CHAN Ka Leung, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Medicine and Therapeutics at CUHK said, ‘On behalf of the Faculty of Medicine at CUHK, I welcome all freshmen joining our family.  We will continue to uphold our mission and commit to nurturing our students, regardless of their background, with the highest standards of professional conduct and ethics.  We will endeavor to train them as doctors with benevolent minds and caring hearts, who will contribute to medical science and research, patient care, and bring changes to the world.’

Professor CHAN added, ‘Our Faculty ranks among the world’s top 50 medical schools in this year's QS international ranking.  Thanks to the continuous contributions and efforts of our teachers, researchers and alumni, we managed to accomplish this ranking within only 35 years of foundation.  On that solid foundation laid by our predecessors, we will continue to create an enjoyable learning arena for our students, guide them through their pursuit of medical knowledge, so that they will carry the legacy of CUHK Medicine forward and be innovative.’

CHEUNG Cheuk Sin, Bernice went to the same secondary school as Maggie. She attained level 5** in seven subjects at DSE last year and was admitted to the GPS programme. She said the Faculty has a very friendly atmosphere and that she wishes to learn to be as humble as the professors.

Bernice has earned different opportunities to trying new things over the past year at CUHK Medicine. She was an intern at a laboratory this summer and went to Nepal to provide teaching service. The top scorer said she will continue to discover the possibilities which help to shape her future path.

For IB, we are seeing the greatest number of high-score achievers in the last 5 years with 10 students scoring  full marks of 45 and 25 students with 44 marks being selected for MBChB Programmes.

In addition to students who attended public examinations this year, the Faculty of Medicine at CUHK has long been supportive of students who are looking for a second chance to study Medicine, including degree holders or students transferring from other programmes.  As of now, the Faculty has admitted around 20 graduates from both local and international top institutes for the 2017/18 Medicine programmes, and quite a number of them are master’s or doctorate degree holders.
