The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Faculty of Medicine (CU Medicine) is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Joseph Lau, a world-renowned expert in hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery. 

Professor Lau has a deep connection with CU Medicine.  He joined the Faculty in 1989 and was Chairman of the Department of Surgery from August 1996 to March 2001. His groundbreaking research has set new standards in the medical field, and inspired generations of medical professionals to push the boundaries of what is possible in healthcare.

Professor Philip Chiu, Dean of CU Medicine said, “Professor Lau is our great teacher and a true medical giant.  His passion for healing and unwavering commitment to excellence will forever remain in our hearts, and his legacy will continue to shine brightly in the world of medicine.  The Faculty mourns the loss of Professor Lau deeply and extends heartfelt condolences to his family.”

Professor Lau’s unwavering dedication has left an indelible mark on the medical community. He was active both at the international and local surgical scene and held many key positions in government and professional organisations.  In 2003, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was awarded Honorary FRACS.
