CUHK Nethersole School of Nursing Holds Community Caring Day and Alumni Carnival To Promote Intergenerational Solidarity, Care for the Elderly
The Nethersole School of Nursing of the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held ‘Community Caring Day and CUHK Nethersole School of Nursing Alumni Carnival’ on 8 October at the Hong Kong Science Park. The event drew a huge crowd of more than 1,400, including over 550 older adults from 15 elderly care organisations and 700 alumni and their families.
The carnival was one of the key events held to celebrate the School’s Silver Jubilee Anniversary. As a salute to the Nethersole spirit of compassionate care for the elderly, the carnival aimed to motivate alumni and students of the School to contribute their expertise to serve the elderly and promote intergenerational solidarity in the community, and so strengthen their civic and social responsibilities. It also offered an invaluable opportunity for alumni to reunite.
Healthcare government officials and many other local nursing leaders came to show their support. Officiating guests include Dr. Wing-man KO, Secretary for Food and Health, HKSAR Government and Prof. Sophia CHAN, Under Secretary for Food and Health, HKSAR Government. They were joined with Prof. Joseph SUNG, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK; Prof. Francis CHAN, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Prof. Sek-ying CHAIR, Director of the Nethersole School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine; and Dr. Che-hung LEONG, Chairman of the Consultative Committee of the Nethersole School of Nursing.
Following the opening ceremony, Ms. Kit-ching YIU, an alumna of the School and an athlete representing Hong Kong in the Rio 2016 Olympics led guests and the elderly in dancing and scarf exercises. The School wishes to promote the importance of exercise in enhancing the health and well-being of the elderly through group activities. Other activities included ‘Healthy and Successful Ageing’ health talks, health checks and counseling, interactive booth games, family fun games and handicraft workshops.
