【A Natural Bypass in the Heart? Groundbreaking Research from CUHK Medicine】Coronary artery disease remains the leading cause of heart disease-related deaths worldwide. Traditionally, when a coronary artery becomes blocked, emergency interventions such as balloon angioplasty or open-heart bypass surgery are needed to restore blood flow. Yet, some individuals possess a “natural bypass” in their hearts: when a main coronary artery is obstructed, collateral arteries can reroute blood flow and help prevent damage. The origins of these vital natural bypasses, however, have long been a mystery.

【Hong Kong’s first】Pelvic fractures are among the most challenging orthopaedic trauma injuries. Carrying a high risk of massive bleeding, they pose a potentially life-threatening threat—particularly to frail elderly individuals. CUHK Medicine has recently introduced a novel orthopaedic robotic surgical system in Hong Kong, performing the city's first robotic-assisted, minimally invasive pelvic fracture reduction and fixation surgery. The CUHK orthopaedic team has completed three successful procedures at Prince of Wales Hospital since June this year.
