Trip to XiShuangBanNa (西雙版納) by Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC)

Professor Emily Chan (Director of CCOUC, School of Public Health, CUHK) and her team led a group of Public Health and Medical / Global Physician-Leadership Stream (GPS) Students to a remote village at XiShuangBanNa (西雙版納). They conducted humanitarian health intervention and assessment of medical needs among villagers of an ethnic minority group on 6-11 January 2015.

Professor Vincent Mok (Assistant Dean, Admission & GPS Mentor), Dr May Yeung (CUHK Medical Graduate, first HK doctor participated in infection control work at West Africa against Ebola epidemic) and an official representative from National Centres for Disease Control and Prevention also joined the team this time.

The trip provided precious exposure for the students in not only knowing the "how" of reaching out for the ethnic minority group, but also let them understand the "why" behind doing such humanitarian work. Important health data were also collected for purpose of academic research and planning for disaster preparedness.

This trip was a con-joint event with the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute.
