GPS Alumnus Allan Lui Receives Cambridge Croucher International Scholarship
Dr. LUI Jo Weng Allan, a GPS graduate in 2019, has earned a Cambridge Croucher International Scholarship in 2020 to pursue PhD in Medical Science at the University of Cambridge. He hopes to be an oncologist in the future.
Allan pursued a one-year Master of Science in Research Medicine at CUHK between his pre-clinical and clinical studies. He studied the stem cell transplantation under the supervision of Professor Woody Wood Yee Chan, whom was also his GPS Mentor and Project Mentor. He also took a summer observership with a thoracic oncologist at a Cancer Center in New York City. After graduation, he joined the dirty team in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Prince of Wales Hospital against the coronavirus as a House Officer. He completed his internship in June and will begin his postgraduate studies in Cambridge in October this year.
Allan’s PhD research focuses on ‘characterising treatment resistance and its development in triple-negative breast cancer using patient-derived xenografts’. ‘Research is essential to medicine.’ Allan believed. ‘My own experience in the lab and my supervisors have proven the importance of doctors to be good scientists as well, to be part of a lasting legacy that can help more patients than any single doctor can treat.’ Allan plans to return to Hong Kong after his PhD and become a clinician-scientist.
