CUHK Sets Asia’s First Three-dimensional Bone Density Standard For Early Diagnosis of Osteoporosis and Fracture Prevention
The 3D imaging device HR-pQCT uses scanning technology to perform precise analysis of the bone micro-architecture and trabecular connectivity to measure bone strength.
Abstract
Researchers from our Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology has used high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) to establish the first three-dimensional (3D) Bone Density Standard in Asia. Setting bone density references for Chinese men and women of different age groups, this new standard will assist in the early diagnosis of osteoporosis and improve doctors’ ability to assess fracture risk in vulnerable patients.
These findings were published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
