Humanitarian Service
Dr. Ben Siu-pan NG (MBChB 2000)

Dr. Ben Siu-pan NG (MBChB 2000) is the awardee in Humanitarian Service 2024 of the Distinguished Medical Alumni Award
There are doctors who serve with skill, and there are those who serve with heart. Dr. Ben NG has spent his life doing both. A dual specialist in Emergency Medicine and Anaesthesiology, he has devoted more than two decades to delivering critical care in some of the world’s most fragile and dangerous environments. From famine-stricken Ethiopia to active conflict zones, Dr. NG has repeatedly answered the call to serve—bringing with him not only clinical expertise, but compassion, steadiness, and moral clarity.
After graduating from CUHK’s Faculty of Medicine in 2000, Dr. NG built a career in Hong Kong’s public hospitals before turning toward an international path shaped by purpose. He holds an extraordinary combination of fellowships and postgraduate qualifications spanning surgery, family medicine, child health, geriatrics, dermatology, and tropical medicine—each pursued not for prestige, but to better equip himself for the complex realities of humanitarian fieldwork.
He has served with Médecins Sans Frontières, the Red Cross, and the HIS Foundation, delivering life-saving care in places where medical infrastructure is minimal. In addition to his overseas missions, he has served for over a decade as an Air Medical Officer with the Hong Kong Government Flying Service and as an escort doctor with International SOS, providing emergency care in high-risk and remote scenarios both locally and abroad. In 2024, he was the sole anaesthesiologist at a hospital in South Sudan, where he performed over 300 operations in a single month. In 2025, amid active bombardment and collapsing infrastructure, he volunteered in Gaza—providing trauma care and surgery to victims with little more than basic supplies.
Despite the risks he has taken and the lives he has saved, Dr. NG has never sought recognition. Instead, he speaks often of his patients, his teammates, and the belief that medicine must serve where it is needed most. His path is one of quiet bravery, deep humanity, and relentless devotion. Dr. NG’s life’s work not only honours CUHK Medicine—it reminds us why we chose this profession in the first place.
