Dr. Vincent Yau-wing LEE (MBChB 1993) is the awardee in Humanitarian Service 2025 of the Distinguished Medical Alumni Award
Sight allows people to live with independence, dignity, and connection—and for three decades, Dr. Vincent LEE Yau-wing has worked to restore that gift to many in need. A leading specialist in Ophthalmology and dedicated humanitarian, he has combined clinical excellence with a deep commitment to service, advancing eye care across Asia while mentoring the next generation of ophthalmologists.
Since 2014, Dr. LEE has served as voluntary faculty with Orbis, the international non-profit organisation working to end avoidable blindness. On missions to Jinan, Shenyang, and Linyi, he has delivered life-changing care aboard the Flying Eye Hospital, a fully equipped surgical and teaching aircraft. There, and in regional hospitals, Dr. LEE performed retinal and macular surgeries while training local ophthalmologists through real-time, hands-on instruction. This dual focus on healing and education greatly extended the impact of his service—improving not only immediate patient outcomes but also long-term capacity in local eye care systems. In recognition of his leadership, Orbis Hong Kong appointed him as the Orbis Ambassador in 2018.
His dedication to outreach began even earlier aboard the Lifeline Express surgical train, where he provided free cataract surgeries to patients from some of China’s most remote areas. In Hong Kong, he has led public screenings, educational campaigns, and media outreach to promote early detection of eye diseases, particularly among unseen populations.
Dr. LEE believes that knowledge shared is vision extended. As the past President of the Hong Kong Ophthalmological Society (2013–2015), he promoted regional collaboration and increased training opportunities for young doctors. At CUHK, he continues to serve as Honorary Clinical Associate Professor, guiding the next generation of surgeons with the same care he brings to his patients.
A pioneer eye surgeon focused in retinal and macular disease, Dr. LEE has dedicated his career to advancing patient care and building lasting capacity in eye healthcare. His work embodies the seamless integration of surgical excellence, innovative thinking, and compassionate service. By combining his clinical expertise with a commitment to teaching and humanitarian outreach, Dr. LEE has helped restore vision while empowering others to do the same—bringing lasting clarity and hope to communities across Asia.
