Department of Surgery
The Department of Surgery is a centre of excellence in the research, teaching and clinical practices in surgery and surgery-related disciplines. The Department of Surgery provides state-of-the-art clinical services in 9 specialties at Prince of Wales, Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole and North District Hospitals to patients in the New Territories and accepts referrals from other hospitals in Hong Kong. Our cluster hospitals perform a total of 1,800 cancer surgeries per annum. We are known for our pioneering use of endo-laparoscopic and robotic surgery in Hong Kong. The Department is recognised by the Hospital Authority of the Hong Kong SAR Government for its excellence in outcome research, metabolic surgery and the management of complex aortic conditions. Our Surgical Laboratory focuses on research into biomarkers to hepatocellular carcinoma, immunotherapy, and 3D cultures of solid organ tumours and their drug testing. Supported by generous endowments, the Department operates several research centres: the CUHK Jockey Club Minimally Invasive Surgical Skills Centre on surgical training and specifically for training in robotic surgery; the Chow Tai Fok Cheng Yu Tung Surgical Stem Cell Research Centre on stem cell therapy; the Otto Wong Brain Tumour Centre on brain tumour research; the Chow Yuk Ho Technology Centre for Innovative Medicine on medical innovations and technologies; the S.H. Ho Urology Centre on prostate cancer research and research on urological diseases; and the Wong Tze Lam - Hing Tak Centre on Surgical Outcome Research.
